WHO ARE THE GOVERNING BODY?

Our Governing body is made up of volunteers from all walks of life.  Our current constitution is:

  • 2 Staff Governors – 1 of these must be the HT or DHT and the other is appointed by the staff
  • 3 Parent Governors appointed by parents
  • 3 Co-opted Governors appointed by the Whole Governing Body for a specific skill set
  • 2 Foundation Governors appointed by Ropley PCC
  • 1 LEA Governor appointed by Hampshire County Council
  • 1 Ex Offico Governor who is usually the current Vicar

Emma Thomas is the current Chair of the Governing Body and Rev Clare Welham is the current Vice Chair

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A CO-OPTED GOVERNOR?

The main role of Governors is to support the strategic planning of the school.  The focus of the governing body is on the long term development and improvement of the school.  The Governors act as a “critical friend” to the Head Teacher and the staff of the school, making constructive and positive suggestions.

WHY DO IT?

If you are considering this role it is because you would like to contribute your skills and time to the ongoing success of the school.

DO I HAVE TIME?

You will be required to attend one Full Governing Body meeting every half term, usually from about 6.00pm in the evening. The Governors are split into sub committees who also meet once every half term and each Governor is also responsible for a specific subject area.  It is expected that you will spend approximately 20 hours per term on meetings, reading documents, visiting the school and attending training.

HOW LONG IS THE TERM FOR?

The term of a Governor is usually four years.

I’M NOT SURE THAT I CAN CONTRIBUTE ANYTHING, SO WHAT SORT OF PEOPLE ARE THEY LOOKING FOR?

No one Governor is expected to know it all!  The strength of a governing body lies in its ability to attract and rely upon members from a wide variety of backgrounds, share out the duties amongst its members and be able to take decisions as a group.  Governors can be from diverse backgrounds such as a stay at home mum to a financial director.  All can bring qualities that will be beneficial to the governance of the school.  You do not need to have any previous educational experience, only energy and enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, although any business experience you have either now, or in the past, may be of benefit to the Governing body as a whole.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Pick up an application form from the school office or download one by clicking on the link below.   A small group of Governors will hold informal interviews before appointing where any questions can be answered.   All Governor appointments are subject to a DBS check.
