Samba, the escaped capybara from Marwell Zoo, called into my garden today and joined in our very own EASTER BREAK reading challenge! Be like Samba! Let's get reading.
Our funny, adventure text this half term was Katherine Rundell's 'The Explorer.' Our Easter holidays reading challenge is to read more of the book and find out about the explorer- will the children meet them? What will they be like? Will they help the children get home?
In class we have read to page 161. Can you read to the end? Or maybe you can read 4 chapters?
Here is a you tube link to chapter 13 - Smoke - if you want to listen or read along with the audio....
and chapter 14 -On the River
Chapter 15 At the top of the cliff
Chapter 20 Twice-fried oiseau spectacle
Chapter 21 Fishing in the dark Chapter 22 Chapter 23 explorer school
Chapter 24 Stuck in the mud Chapter 25 Max Chapter 26 Behind the vines
Chapter 27 The green stuff Chapter 28 Waiting for dawn
Chapter 29 flight home Chapter 30 Another type of exploring
Spring 2 in Maths means we revisited some of our autumn term learning- to ensure our skills remain sharp. Then, we launch into making connections between fractions, decimals and percentages.
This half-term visited Eggar's school for our delayed Pizza Making visit, where we will completed our DT unit by making the pizzas we designed. See the photos- they were delicious. We also learnt about siting, spacing and planning a real-life project within our school grounds, which required all our geographical skills. Watch out for an announcement soon!

Our Year 5 Reading Challenge is a focus for widening our reading. There are twenty fantastic books on our challenge, written by varying authors. We are sharing recommendations in class and working out the most read book. Will anyone read all twenty by the end of year 5? There is still time to do so. We have a collection of the texts available to borrow in class, in the school library and of course, reservable at any Hampshire library. The texts are in the above picture and in a larger infographic on a link below. Which will be the class favourite? Will it be one of the portal stories? Whilst reading the books is brilliant, listening to some of these brilliant books on audio can also widen our vocabulary and introduce us to new authors. I've heard some of the class parents are enjoying sharing some of these books on audio during car journeys! Let us know which ones you like best.
Here are our routines across the week;
PE Days will change to Wednesday (indoor) and Friday (outdoor) for this half-term
Homework is given on Thursdays- due back anytime before the next Thursday. Please only spend 30 minutes of concentrated time on the task- do ask for help if needed.
Reading is brilliant and so good for us, it helps us relax and widens our imaginations - we still hope you will read 5 times each week; reading a bit aloud to an adult is great practice and means you can share your story. Ask your adult to record your 5 reads on your record card please. Don't forget to access audio books too- there are such good stories here to fall asleep dreaming of! Use your Sora Library login https://soraapp.com/welcome
Spellings are given and assessed on the following Friday. Words can be tricky in Year 5, so a little practice but done often, is best. Focus on a few words that you recognise first - then build up over the week. You can find this half-terms spelling lists on this page on a tab to the right - called Spellings.
